The Spoiler Culture of Game of Thrones – And Why I Can’t Think of a Valid Excuse For It

Last night, I planned on writing up a post of my feelings and reactions to the season 6 Game of Thrones finale. But honestly? There’s not much I can say that’s any different from how we all feel – we’re all bummed about certain scenes and excited about others. But there’s something else I was thinking about this morning – if you follow me on Twitter, I briefly made some comments before realizing I had too much to say for 140 characters.

I want to talk about spoilers. Not just the actual spoilers of last night (although it’s probably best you’re all caught up before you continue reading), but spoilers in general and their bizarre role in the fandom.

Spoilers, I’m really, really annoyed.

Guys. I knew this episode was going to happen. I didn’t think it would be the second episode of the season.

Give me a second.

Okay! Lots to go over with this one. Lots of things I expected to happen and I’m excited that we’re going to see what happens next so quickly. After last week’s episode, I realized that I missed being a part of an active, current show that you could theorize about, where you didn’t know the ending yet. Each week of waiting meant lots of ideas brewing and clues to look for and other theories to read about and think “Oh, gosh that really makes sense.” That being said, I feel pretty excited for Sunday nights to arrive again, which hasn’t been a feeling I’ve known in a while.

Obviously, maaaajor spoilers ahead!

Woo Boy, everyone! Season 6 of Game of Thrones is here, and it’s going to be a crazy ride. I’m a much newer fan to the world of Westeros than my normal gang of watchers, who have been long time book readers. I had never even heard of the series until my friends started flipping out when they heard the news that HBO was going to adapt it into a show. So I devoured the books as fast as I could before each season started – but as we all know by this point, the show is now caught up with the books and no one knows what is going to happen next.

I spent the past weekend in Austin at a convention I’ll blog about later this week, so I’ve only been able to sit down and watch it now. I’ve only been spoiled for one thing, but it’s a super cool revelation I think, so I’m excited to talk about this episode further.

Spoilers ahead!
